Is Dr.Manmohan Singh an 'Under-Achiever' and a 'Tragic Figure' as criticized by US Magazines?

$

‘Time’-Magazine, in its Asian Edition,  has  called Dr.Manmohan Singh,
the Prime Minister of India as an ‘Under-Achiever’ and says that
Dr.Singh appears ‘unwilling to stick his neck out’  on reforms
that will put the country back on growth path.
Following the ‘Time’ Magazine,
the US Daily- ‘Washington Post’ has described Dr.Manmohan Singh
as a ‘Tragic Figure’.

In the Washington post, the  writer Mr.Simon Denyer has said that
India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh helped to set his country
on the path to modernity, prosperity and power, but critics say
the shy, soft-spoken 79-year-old is in danger of going down in history as a failure.

The Washington Post, in a front page story, has criticised Dr.Singh
for presiding over a deeply corrupt government.

The Post says that the image of the scrupulously honorable,
humble and intellectual technocrat has slowly given way
to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat
presiding over a deeply corrupt government.

The report refers to the continuous disruption of Parliament
in the past two weeks over the coal block allocations.

According to the Washington Post:
  • The story of Dr.Singh's dramatic fall from grace in his second term in office and the slow but steady tarnishing of his reputation have played out in parallel with his country's decline on his watch
  •  As India's economy has slowed and as its reputation for rampant corruption has reasserted itself, the idea that the country was on an inexorable road to becoming a global power has increasingly come into question
As the  Washington Post article on the allegedly poor leadership of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh created a strong reaction in Delhi, the  US daily's Correspondent said he stood by the story and offered no apology.

Will 'Housewives' in India get a Salary from their Husbands for their "Home-Making"?

$
0
0

Indian Union Ministry for Women and Child Development (WCD)
has conducted a survey on the theme” whether salary be paid to Indian Housewives by the husbands for the work done and services rendered by them to their:
  • Husbands,
  • Children,
  • Grand-Children and
  • In-Laws and
  • Other Relatives/Guests etc.

The WCD Ministry, triggered by some NGO’s interested in Socio-Economic Empowerment of Women in India,. has started the process of:
  • Taking a Survey,
  • Having Discussions with the Ministers of Different States,
  • Taking Steps to prepare a Draft Bill and
  • Passing the Bill as a Law.
As and if the proposal for providing salary for the housewives is implemented, the husbands will have to
pay a certain portion from their salaries/incomes to be credited to separate bank accounts of the wives.

The salary received by the housewives is supposed to be spent on better food, facilities, education, recreation and the overall quality of standard of living of the entire household.

According to the WCD Ministry, in spite of the Indian housewives  doing very valuable and difficult works for themselves, their husbands,  children and other members of the families, the value of their works go unaccounted and the same is not taken into account while assessing the GDP of the country.

At the outset, it appears that Indian women will welcome the ‘theme’ of getting salary for being housewives.

However, the ‘theme’ will change the real love, affection and the basic relation between the husband and wife, perhaps bringing in a employer-employee relationship.

Instead of making the law to provide for the ‘salary’ to the housewife, some other schemes may be introduced such as statutory-minimum/compulsory life-insurance, medical insurance, investments etc. for the housewives and children.

The Survey/discussions on the ‘theme’ should have come across many cases of unemployed/under-employed husbands of employed wives looking after the home-affairs.

Will such “house-husbands’ also get salary from their wives?

Though the ‘theme’ appears to be for the benefit of housewives, the outcome will be bringing disgrace to the institution of the sacred marriages in India.

Men will be discouraged to get married and divorces will be increased as an impact of such a 'theme'.

Let us hope that the WCD Ministry will ensure equality of men and women in the employments, salary etc. in India in both public and private sectors.

Do You Know Why The People of Koodankulam Oppose the "Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project" ?

$
0
0

The people living in and around Koodankulam Village had been opposing the “Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project” (KNPP),  right from the time the project was conceived in the year 1980.

The Kookdankulam people were misled by promises of the Government such as:

  • 10000 Jobs
  • Water from Pechiparai Dam in Kanyakumari District and
  • Development of the area in various fields in view of the Nuclear Power Project.
Now, as people understood that the above promises will not become true and realized the risks involved in
having the Nuclear Project in their area, the opposition to the project had grown from the year 2007.

The following are the major reasons for the people of Koodankulam opposing the “KNPP”:
  • The KKNPP reactors are being set up without sharing the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Site Evaluation Study and Safety Analysis Report with the people, or the people’s representatives or the press. No public hearing has been conducted  for the first two reactors either. There is absolutely no democratic decision-making in or public approval for this project.
  • The Tamil Nadu Government G.O. 828 (29.4.1991 – Public Works Department) establishes clearly that “area between 2 to 5 km radius around the plant site, [would be] called the sterilization zone.” This means that people in this area could be displaced. But the KKNPP authorities promise orally and on a purely adhoc basis that nobody from the neighboring villages  would be displaced. This kind of adhocism and doublespeak causes suspicion and fears of displacement. More than 1 million people live within the 30 km radius of the KKNPP which far exceeds the AERB (Atomic Energy Regulatory  Board) stipulations. It is quite impossible to evacuate this many people quickly and efficiently in case of  a nuclear disaster at Koodankulam.
  • The coolant water and low-grade waste from the KKNPP are going to be dumped in to the seawhich will have a severe impact on fish production and catch. This will undermine the fishing industry,  push the fisherfolks into deeper poverty and misery and affect the food security of the entire southern Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala.
  • Even when the KKNPP projects function normally without any incidents and accidents, they would be emitting Iodine 131, 132, 133, Cesium 134, 136, 137 isotopes, strontium, tritium, tellurium and other such radioactive particles into  air, land, crops, cattle, sea, seafood and ground water.
  • Already the southern coastal belt is sinking with very high incidence of  cancer, mental retardation, down syndrome, defective births due to private and government sea-sand mining for rare minerals including thorium. The KKNPP will add many more woes to our already suffering people.
  • The quality of construction and the pipe work and the overall integrity of the KKNPP structures have been called into question by the very workers and contractors who work there in Koodankulam. There have been international concerns about the design, structure and workings of the untested Russian-made VVER-1000 reactors.
  • The then Minister of State in the Ministry of Environment and Forest Mr.Jairam Ramesh announceda few months ago that the central government had decided not to give permission to KKNPP 3-6 as they were violating the Coastal Regulation Zone stipulations. It is pertinent to ask if KKNPP 1 and 2 are not violating the CRZ terms.
  • Many political leaders and  bureaucrats try to reassure us that there would be no natural disasters in the Koodankulam area. How can they know? How can anyone ever know? The 2004 December tsunami did flood the KKNPP installations. There was a mild tremor in the surrounding villages of Koodankulam on March 19, 2006.On August 12, 2011, there were tremors in 7 districts of Tamil Nadu.
  • Indian Prime Minster himself has spoken about terrorist threats to India’s nuclear power plants. Most recently, on August 17,  2001, Minister of State for Home, Mr. Mullappally Ramachandran said: “the atomic establishments continue to remain prime  targets of the terrorist groups and outfits.”
  • The important issue of liability for the Russian plants has not been settled yet. Defying the Indian nuclear liability   law, Russia insists that the Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA), secretly signed in 2008 by the Indian and Russian governments, precedes the liability law and that Article 13 of the IGA clearly establishes that NPCIL is solely responsible for all claims of damages.
  • In 1988 the authorities said that the cost estimate of the Koodakulam 1 and 2 projects was Rs. 6,000 crores. In November 1998, they said the project cost would be Rs. 15,500. In 2001, the ministerial group for economic affairs  announced that the project cost would be Rs. 13,171 crores and the Indian government  would invest Rs. 6,775 crores with the remainder amount coming in as Russian loan with 4 percent interest. The fuel cost was estimated to be  Rs. 2,129 crores which would be entirely Russian loan. No one knows  the 2011 figures of any of these expenses. No one cares to tell the Indian public either.
  • The March 11, 2011 disaster in Fukushima has made it all too clear to the whole world thatnuclear power plants are prone to natural disasters and no one can really predict their occurrence. When we cannot  effectively deal with a nuclear disaster, it is only prudent to prevent it from occurring. Even the most industrialized and highly advanced country such as Germany has decided to phase out their nuclear power plants  by the year 2022.Switzerland has decided to shun nuclear power technology.
  • In a recent referendum, some 90 percent of Italians have voted against nuclear power in their country. Many Japanese prefectures and their governors are closing nuclear power plants in their regions.
  • Both the United States and Russia  have not built a new reactor in their countries for 2-3 decadesever since major accidents occurred at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. In our own country,
  • Mamta Banerjee government in West Bengal has stopped the Russian nuclear power park projectat Haripur in Purba Medhinipur district and taken a position  that they do want any nuclear power project in their state. Similarly, the people of Kerala have decided  not to host any nuclear power project in their state.
  • The Indian government’s mindless insistence on nuclear power, utmost secrecy in all of its nuclear agreements and activities, and its sheer unwillingness to listen to the people’s concerns and fears make us  very doubtful about the real benefactors of all this nuclear hoopla.
  • Is it all for us, the people of India? Or for the corporate profits of the Russian, American and French companies? Or for the Indian military? Are the lives and futures of the Indian citizens inferior to all these?
The Supreme Court of India is hearing the petitions from the "Anti-KNPP" People, and the Supreme Court Judges assure that, if the Project is unsafe, the same can be stopped at any stage, despite the amount of loss due to the stopping of the Project as the lives of the people are more important.

However, the Government of India is repeatedly telling the Supreme Court that the "Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project" is safe.

‘Ulaga Nayagan’ Kamal Hassan’s ‘Nayakan’  was released in the year 1987.

‘Nayakan’ was voted as one of the Time Magazine’s ‘Top 100 Films’ of all time in the year 2005.

Now,  as 25 years elapsed from the release of the super-hit film, 'Nayakan', based on the real story of  an 'under- world don'- Varadaraja Mudaliar  of Mumbai,  similar to the English Movie, ‘Godfather’ released in the year 1972, Dr.Kamal Hassan has recollected how the film was made, in the direction of Director G.Maniratnam and produced by Mukhtha Srinivasan, a popular producer of South Indian films.

It is notable that Mukhtha Srinivasan has recently celebrated his 80th  birthday.

Kamal Hassan has described how he could complete ‘Nayakan’ in the way they wanted,  as a result of discussions and plans he had with his director Maniratnam  and

his Art Director Thotta Tharani who all worked to make a different film.

Inspite of the differences of attitude and approach  regarding cost of taking the film etc. ,of his team and the original producer Mukhtha Srinivasan, perhaps due to a vast gap between their ideologies.

However, Kamal Hassan and his team could achieve in making a different film.

Later, the film was purchased by Director Maniratnam and his

elder brother, Film Financier/Producer, Mr. G. Venkateswaran.

In the recently concluded US Presidential elections, Mr. Barrack Obama has been elected as the President of the United States, for a second term.

Mr. Obama or his rival, Republican candidate Mitt Romney did not express their views on India in detail during the 2012 campaign. The topic never came up during their debate on foreign policy.

However,it is the expectation of Indid that Mr. Obama would continue his approach to India in :
                    • Expanding trade,
                    • Ramping up military cooperation,
                    • Staying out of the India-Pakistan Dispute over Kashmir and
                    • Opposing outsourcing in IT field and forcing Indian IT Companies to hire US employees.

Dr.Subramanian Swamy To move Court for Election Commission's Rejection of his Petition To De Recognize Congress Party

                    0
Dr. Subramanian Swamy, the Chief of Janata Party had moved the Election Commission demanding to derecognise the Indian National Congress for an Interest Free/Unsecured Loan  of more than Rs 90 crores to the ‘Associated Journal’, the publishing company of the Indian newspaper, ‘National Herald’ started by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

According to Dr.Swamy, Indian National Congress had "prima facie" committed an offence under electoral law as well as Income Tax law for which it is necessary to hold hearings and decide on derecognising the party.

The Election Commission of India had rejected Dr. Subramanian Swamy's petition  after its full meeting, headed by Chief Election Commissioner  Mr. V S Sampath, dismissing his plea holding that it did not fall under any of the grounds specified for de-recognition of a political party.

The Election  Commission said that even though the Representation of People Act, 1951 provides for the manner in which the registered political parties may raise their funds, "there is no provision whatsoever in that Act prescribing the manner in which the political parties may use those funds."

Dr.Swamy has recalled that the EC panel had sent him a petition of the minorities commission last year, seeking de-registration of the Janata Party over an "objectionable piece" he wrote in a national daily.

According to Dr.Swamy the Election Commission had sent the petition filed by the Minorities Commission to him for his for comments despite the fact that the Supreme Court had, in its judgment earlier, held that the EC had no power to de-register any political party.

Dr.Swamy himselfquotes as above that EC has no power to de-register any political party. Why, then he filed a petition to EC instead of moving court?
Dr. Swamy has pointed out that the EC has moved so swiftly and rejected his petition without hearing him or sending his petition to the Indian  National Congress or Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Mr. Rahul Gandhi for comments. And in  Dr. Swamy’s view the EC has ‘double standard’ in handling petitions.

Dr.Swamy would move court against the EC's rejection of his plea for de-recognition of the Indian National Congress.

We will have to wait and see whether, Dr. Swamy would succeed in getting the Indian National Congress de-recognized by the Supreme Court of India
