  • The Christian College High School,Madras
  • Bachelor of Arts: Maharaja College of Mysore

Personal and Writing Career of R.K.Narayan:

After completing his High School, R.K.Narayan was unable to pass the entrance examination for joining his graduation, and was at home for one year. During the time R.K.Narayan had been reading a lot and got interest in writing.

After one year he joined the college for his graduation and completed his B.A.in 4 years instead of 3 years.
R.K.Narayan worked as a teacher for some time and decided to become a novelist and quit the job and stayed at home and started writing.

Initially, he had been writing for local Newspapers and Magazines and he could not get enough encouragement for his writing or sufficient income from his writings.

However, R.K.Narayan wrote his first novel-‘Swamy and Friends’ in the year 1930, in which he created his imaginary town called “Malgudi”.

In the year 1933, he went to his sister’s house at Coimbatore, when he was 27 years old, where he fell in love with a 15 years old girl Rajam, who lived near his sister's house, who was a few inches taller than he, and married her, despite hurdles in the form of horoscope matching problems and financial problems.
RKN with Wife Rajam and Daughter Hema

Then R.K.Narayan joined a journal named ‘Justice’ run for the welfare of anti-brahmins, whereas, he was a Brahmin.

During the period, R.K.Narayan had many contacts and friends in India and in England. He had sent the manuscript of his first novel ‘Swamy and Friends’ to one of his friends at Oxford who showed the same to Mr.Graham Greene, who in turn recommended for publication in England.
Graham Greene

Mr.Graham Greene suggested R.K.Narayan to change/shorten his name from 'R.K.Narayanaswamy' to 'R.K.Narayan' to make his name familiar with overseas readers and also suggested the name 'Swamy and Friends' to his first novel.

In the year 1935, R.K.Narayan’s  first nove “Swamy and Friends’ was published in England.

Subsequently, three more of his books were also published in England by the help of Mr.Graham Greene and R.K.Narayan’s novels, especially the “Malgudi” became popular in England.

In the year 1939, his wife Rajam died of typhoid when his daughter Hema was just 3 years old.

R.K.Narayan’s first 3 novels had been ‘auto-biographical’, as he wrote based on his own life experiences of his school days, his love and marriage, death of his wife, taking care of his only daughter and his experiences on money matters/finance.

In the year 1940, he started his own journal named ‘Indian Thought’ and despite having had more than 1000 subscribers in the Madras City only, he could not manage to continue the journal for more than a year.

In the year 1943, R.K.Naryan started his own publishing company by name- “Indian Thought Publications”.

As the “Indian Thought Publications” started selling well, R.K.Narayan started constructing his own house in the outskirts of Mysore in the year 1948 and completed  the house in the year 1953.

R.K.Narayan’s Publishing Company “Indian Thought Publications” is still running well, managed by his granddaughter, now.

In the year 1953, R.K.Narayan’s books  were first published in the United States of America  by ‘Michigan State University Press’, and by ‘Viking Press’ from the year 1958.

In the year 1956, R.K.Narayan conducted his daughter Hema’s wedding with orthodox traditional Hindu rituals, and started travelling to various places in and out of India and continued to write.

Quotes by R.K.Naryan:

We come together only to go apart again.
The law of life can't be avoided.
The law comes into operation the moment we detach ourselves from our mother's womb.
All struggle & misery in life is due to our attempt to arrest this law or get away from it or in allowing ourselves to be hurt by it.
The fact must be recognized. A profound unmitigated loneliness is the only truth of life.
All else is false.
The law of life.
No sense in battling against it...-

How To Change Mobile Phone Service Provider- Retaining the Same Number?

What is Mobile Number Portability/MNP?
Mobile Number Portability/MNP is the facility to switch over from one Mobile Phone Service Provider  from anywhere in India to another Service Provider anywhere in India, retaining the same Mobile Number.

This facility of 'Mobile Number Portability' was introduced in India from 1st January 2011, for porting within the circles.

However, the National Rollout of ‘MNP’ across all  the States and Telecom Circles has been established since 3rd July 2015.

Who can make use of Mobile Number Portability?

Any Mobile Phone user, whose current Mobile service is more than 90 days from the date of activation, can make use of the MNP facility:

  • To switch over from one Mobile Service Provider to another in the same place and/or in a different place anywhere in India.
  • To switch over from Code Division Multiple Access/CDMA to Global System for Mobile/GSM or from GSM to CDMA within the same service provider or to another.
How To get the Mobile Number Ported?

In the case of 'Post Paid' customers, the latest bill must have been paid in full.

In the case of Pre- paid customers, it must be ensured that the balance in the mobile service is “NIL”, as the balance, if any, will get elapsed in the process of porting.

Step 1:

The customer must send a Text Message- "PORT’ "  from the existing mobile number to the number‘1900’.

Once the message is successfully sent, the customer will receive an ‘Unique Poring Code’/UPC Code with 8 digits, valid for 15 days.
For the customers in Jammu&Kashmir, as prepaid SMS is not permitted in J&K, the customer must dial ‘1900’ and obtain the UPC.

Step 2:

The customer will have to go to the nearest mobile operator showroom of the mobile service to which he/she wishes to get ported,

along with the ‘UPC’ and photo copies of Address Proof and ID proof and a recent passport size photo of the customer and

Fill in the prescribed application form ofr porting and

submit the same along with the photo copies of Address Proof and Photo ID proof and

pay a nominal fee of about Rs 19/- and get a new SIM card from the new service provider’s shop.

(Note:  The customer may cancel the porting request within 24hrs of applying for porting. However, the porting charges payable/collected will not be refunded.)

Within one day of submitting the application, the customer will receive a message accepting the number porting.  The process of porting will take normally 7 days.

A disruption will occur for 2 hours during mid night in the previous net work and an SMS  will be received providing the date and time of porting.

Step 3:

Then the customer may insert the new SIM start using the mobile with the same number under the new service provider.

How To Create 'Effective Garbage Management' Awareness in India

$
0
0
In the developing countries like India, 'Garbage/Waste Management has been a challenging problem faced by the Government authorities, in view of the increasing volume of garbage produced and the lack of land/space for disposal of garbage collected from the households and factories etc.
As all kinds of wastes, including solid wastes, re-usable/re-cycle-able materials like paper, cloth and plastics are thrown by the people in garbage bins and dumped in garbage storing landscapes.
In almost all the parts of India, millions of people, especially women and children are engaged in rag/waste- picking as the means of their livelihood.

The ‘Waste-Pickers’ are looked down upon by other people and the waste pickers experience difficulties in their life of waste picking for their survival.
In Pune, public activists/NGOs have  set up an  organisation, by name-‘ Kagad, Kach, Patra, Kashtakari Panchayat’/KKPKP for the cause of fighting for the rights of rag/waste pickers.
It is notable that a lady member of -‘ Kagad, Kach, Patra, Kashtakari Panchayat’/KKPKP, Pune participated in and addressed the ‘104th Session of the ‘International Labour Conference’ of the 'International Labour Organization'/ILOheld at Genevo from from 1st June 2015 to 13th June 2015 at Geneva, Switzerland.
The member of -‘ Kagad, Kach, Patra, Kashtakari Panchayat’/KKPKP, Pune, 50 years old  Ms.Suman More had been a ‘Waste-Picker’ for her livelihood since 37 years.
In her address at the ‘ILC’, Ms.Suman More had explained her experiences in her life of ‘waste-picking’ and the contributions of their association--‘ Kagad, Kach, Patra, Kashtakari Panchayat’/KKPKP, Pune, in improving the status of their member ‘waste pickers’.
In India, the corporations and the Municipalities have delegated the garbage management to private contractors.

The private contractors, collect the garbage from the households and factories and destroy the entire garbage by burning, in view of the labour and cost of segregating the re-cycle able waste and bio waste which can be converted into compost for use as fertiliziers.

Because of the private contractors handling the garbage collection and clearance, the ‘waste-pickers’ are affected in their operations and also  their source of livelihood is affected.

The Union Government of India has launched “Swachch Bharath” Mission and “Smart Cities Mission” for ‘Cleaning India’.
The State Government of Delhi has announced that a National Award with a Cash Prize of Rs 1.5 Lakhs will be given to the 3 best rag pickers and 3 ‘Associations of Rag Pickers’ for their contribution in keeping India Clean and to encourage further the ‘Clean India’ Mission.
The Union Government of India and the State Governments in India will have to take the possible and necessary steps to manage efficiently, the  garbage in the cities and towns and enable the re-cycle able wastes to be segregated and the ‘waste pickers’ would get benefit from the same, in collaboration with the Associations of Waste Pickers and the ‘NGO’s really interested in the welfare of ‘waste pickers’ and garbage management, in the various parts of India.
The general public also should be aware of the importance of and the difficulties in ‘Waste/Garbage Management’ and sort out wastes while throwing them into their dust-bins and while disposing off into the public garbage collecting bins, or giving away to door to door garbage collectors.
The garbage thrown by the people must be segregated  into various types such as:
  • Dry Wastes,
  • Wet Wastes,
  • Bio-degradable wastes,
  • Non degradable wastes,
  • Recycle able wastes like paper, clothes and plastic etc.,
  • Electric/Electronic and Computer Wastes,
  • Hazardous Wastes and
  • Debris (Dust and broken & unusable things)

However, the Tamilnadu- ‘Raj Bhavan’ officials had expressed their/ the Governor’s apology over the matter, though the situation occurred as one of the two battery cars in the station was out of order.

The Railway authorities should take care to keep the wheel chairs, battery cars and the operators& their mobile numbers in working conditions, to enable the intended facilities to be available to the needy passengers without fail or delay.

Even if the capital punishments awarded to the above 5 convicts in the ‘2006 Mumbai Train Blasts’ case be confirmed by the apex court of India, they may go for ‘clemency’/mercy petitions to the Governor/s and or the President of India.

It is notable that the people of India are against the ‘death penalty’ and the ‘Law Commission of India’ has recommended for abolishing the capital punishment in India, except in the rarest of rare cases, especially in ‘Terror Activities’.

The movie has only one song ( Vaadaa Vaa Machi )in it, though five songs were shot for the movie.
Vaadaa Vaa Machi

Interestingly, there is ‘No Heroine’ in the movie, "D'Monte".

According to the Director and the Producer of the Tamil Movie-‘D’Monte’, when the movie was shot, most of the houses in the colony had been already demolished.

The remaining houses also were reported to be demolished soon.

And so, the movie was shot at a  different location and in sets.
Though the movie ‘D’Monte’ is based on the colony, the 'Screen -Play of the movie is entirely different from the 'Real Story' of the late D’Monte.

To make the 'ghost- less'- horror movie, really terrifying, the writer, Ajay Gnanamuthu  has used his imagination and altered the true story suitably.

However, the ‘ghost- less’ Tamil Horror Movie has been a successful one, which has created an awareness of the real colony in Chennai.

After the release of the movie, the 'reportedly haunted'- D’Monte Colony  became the attraction to the anxious young men in the city, who have been trying to explore the place.

Some 'Short Films' have been taken inside the D'Monte Colony, which are published in the social media and youtube.

The movie ‘D’Monte’ is said to have refreshed the ‘ghost-fears’ in the minds of the people living in Chennai and nearby places.

It is said that the number of visitors to the colony has increased a lot, due to the impact of the movie ‘D’Monte’.

The following is the ‘Screenplay’ of the Tamil Horror Movie-‘D’Monte Colony’:-

An aspiring film writer Raghavan (Sanath) narrates a horror story to a Film Producer (Singam Puli)
and the producer wants to have a comedy plot, without any story at all, which in his opinion would be successful.
Singampuli

In the meanwhile, four persons known to Raghavan, the film writer namely:
  • Sajith, an Electrician ( Abhishek Joseph) ,
    Abhishek Joseph
  • Vimal , a Graphic Designer(Ramesh Thilak) ,
    Ramesh Thilak
  • Srinivasan, the Hero ( Arulnithi)  and
    Arulnidhi
  • Ms.Jill, a Married Woman (Jaangiri Madhumitha) -who is giving them company on payment of salary- a domestic help (non-sexual)
Jaangiri Madhumitha
-Decide to explore the abandoned/haunted ‘D’Monte Colony’.
Abandoned DMonte Colony
Having deadly and horror experiences, the above four persons come out of the colony, with much difficulty.
Ghost of DMonte

The next day they meet a 'Naadi Jodhidar'/'Pulse Reading Astrologer'(M.S.Bhaskar) to know about their future from him.
The Friends Consulting Naadi Astrologer
The futures of the three out of the four, except Shaji,  the Electrician are predicted by the Astrologer.

After returning back from the Astrologer, the Astrologer contacts Srinivasan over mobile and asks him to meet him urgently regarding a very important matter.

When Srinivasan goes to the place of the Astrologer, he is found dead.

Then, while Shaji, the electrician is sleeping in a room, Vimal and Srinivasan ask Raghavan to tell them the story of the ‘D’Monte Colony’, and Raghavan  narrates them the story of the late ‘D’Monte’ the four friends.

Raghavan stars narrating the story of the D'Monte Colony as below:

“Long time ago, there  was a colony of the Portuguese staying in India, owned by a  Portuguese Businessman -John De Monte and it  is called 'Demandi Colony'.

D’Monte had ordered for made a special Diamond Necklace for gifting to his wife on her birthday.

His wife became mentally ill  and D’Monte wrote to his son, who was  at Portugal, to  inform him about his mother. D’Monte came to know that his son died, as soon he mailed the letter to him.

The depressed D’Monte wished to go back to his home country.

He went out of Madras to take steps for selling  his properties before leaving India.

After 5 months, when D’Monte returned to Madras, he came to know that his mentally ill wife was pregnant.

He asked a doctor to come to his house abort the child in his wife's womb.

The doctor refused to do so and in anger D’Monte shot the doctor dead.

He shot dead all his servants in the house due to doubts on them.

The locals got angry as D’Monte killed the doctor and the innocent servants and set fire to his house.

In the meanwhile, D’Monte shot at the gas pipe and died of fire in the same house.

While dying, D’Monte had cast a curse on the diamond necklace of his wife.

By virtue of  the curse, persons trying to steal the necklace would be killed and the necklace would somehow return back to the house of D’Monte.”-

-Raghavan ends his narration of the story of the DMonte Colony with this.

Raghavan, then says that he has stolen the diamond necklace from the D'Monte Colony,  and they all start  planning  for their future settlement in life, based on the huge amount they may get by selling the necklace.

Then, abnormal things start to happen in their room of the apartment.

The Television cannot be switched off.

Their DVD player  starts playing their conversations, showing the death scenes described by the film writer.

The power is cut off and Srinivasan, calls the EB.

The hero, Srinivasan says that the astrologer has died the previous night and tells about the phone call of the astrologer.

When they play the recorded call in the mobile, they find that the astrologer has said that one of the four of them has already died the last night.

Then they all run to see Shaji, the electrician, who is found to be lying dead on his bed.

They all get frightened by the super-natural happenings and try to leave the apartment and try to open the door.

They cannot open the doos and windows in the apartment.

They shout for help from the neighbors and persons outside and their voices are not heard outside.

They seek the help of the’Ouija Board’( a medium of talking to the dead spirits and ghosts)and they come to know from the ghosts, that none of them would stay alive, as they had stolen the necklace of D'Monte Colony.

As per the curse, they start dying one by one.

Raghavan,  the film writer dies first and Vimal, the graphic designer dies next.

The hero, Srinivasan, somehow manages to open a window and jumps out of the room and  escapes.

He comes running to the tea stall nearby and asks the persons standing there for help in a loud voice.

Nobody appears to hear his voice or knows his presence there.

Then only Srinivasan finds that his voice is not audible to anyone.

He realises that he has already died, while jumping out of the first  floor of the apartment, through a window.

He sees Shaji, the electrician to carry the  diamond neck lace for returning to the D’Monte Colony house. -

With that the movie 'Ends' ”

Son: Bhoopathy-Actor-cum-Singer –Born in the year 1965

Education:  According to Manorama, Gopi Shantha attended Primary School at Pallathoor, Chettinadu and Discontinued Studies after the 6th Standard, due to poverty and her interest in singing and acting in Stages and Dramas.

Occupation: Tamil Cinema Actress and Singer

Career: Gopi Shantha started singing for dramas artists as play back and she started acting in stage dramas from the age of 12 years.

In the ‘Stage Dramas’, Gopi Shantha’s name was changed as ‘Manorama’ by the 'Harmonist'- Thiayagarajan.

Manorama had been acting in small roles in the‘Vairam Nataga Sabha’ dramas, staged in Chettinadu and the surrounding places, including Pudukkottai.

Manorama saw a drama of the popular Tamil Drama-Producer / Actor-S.S.Rajendran/SSR, at Pudukkottai,
Tamilnadu. She was introduced to SSR, and after having voice and acting tests, she joined the ‘SSR Nataga Mandram’ and became the full time drama artist of the 'SSR Nataga Mandram'.
SS Rajendran
Manorama had been associated with  S.S.Rajendran and his 'SSR- Nataga Mandram' for many years and she had been acting as the heroines of the 'SSR Nataga Mandram'’s dramas.

  • Mani Magudam,
  • Then Pandi Veeran and
  • Pudhu Vellam.
Manorama entered the ‘Silver Screen'/Cinema Field, from the ‘Stage Dramas Field', as she had been aspiring to  become a popular heroine in the Cinema Field.

However, according to Manorama, ‘Kavignar’- Kannadasan had told she wished to act only as the heroine, she would be losing the movie chances after 4 or 5 years and if she acted in comedy roles, she would continue in the movie field for many years.

Also, 'Kaviyarasar'-Kannadasan, told that Manorama was talented and he  hoped and wished that she would become a very good comedian in the Cinema Field..
Kavignar Kannadasan
In the year 1958, Manorama acted in her first Tamil Movie-‘Maalaiyitta Mangai’, in a comedy roleproduced by Kannadasan, starring T.R.Mahalingam and Pandaribai.
Kannadasan's Maalaiyitta Mangai

Though Manorama was not an ‘Aachi’-meaning an elderly lady of Chettinadu, she had been called as ‘Aachi’ because:
  • Her mother moved from Rajamannargudi, Tanjore District, after Gopi Shantha’s birth, and subsequent to her divorce by her husband, to Pallathoor, Chettinadu near Karaikkudi, people thought that she was a native of Chettinadu.
  • Further, as Manorama  had acted in one of the dramas, as an ‘Aachi’, speaking in the same manner as how an ‘Aachi’ would speak,  her audience started calling her as  ‘Aachi’.
  • In the Dramas and the Cinema Fields  the co-actors started calling Manorama as ‘Aachi’,with a respect.
In the year 1963,  Manorama acted as the heroine in the Tamil Movie-‘Konjum  Kumari’,  produced by the 'Modern Theatres' with R.S.Manohar as the hero. However, after ‘Konjum Kumari’, which was not well received by the audience, with Manorama as a Heroine and R. S.Manohar as the Hero, Manorama started acting mostly in comedy roles and character roles and later in mother characters.

The Real Story of D’Monte Colony is as given below:

D'Monte was a Portugese Businessman, who had come to India in the  mid 1900's and stayed at Pondicherry and then at Madras/Chennai. D’Monte had been one of the directors of ‘Arbuthnot Bank’, a leading Bank in Madras, which went down in the year 1906.

He had acquired many landed properties in various places of Madras/Chennai.

He had been living with his wife in one of the houses in the D'Monte Colony, situated in TTK Nagar, Alwarpet, near St.Mary's Road, Mylapore.

D’Monte’s personal life had been tragic, as his mentally ill and pregnant wife died before delivering a baby in the house of the colony.

His son, who had come from their motherland-Portugal, also died in a mysterious way in the same house of the colony.

Subsequently, D’Monte is said to have commited suicide in the same house.

D'Monte's body has been burried near the church, 'Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church' built by him in Covelong/Kovalam, near Chennai.
Our Lady of St Carmel Church at Kovalam

The Details of the Landed Properties of D'Monte, covered under D'Monte Trust created in the year 1820:-

D’Monte had  created a ‘Trust’ in his name-‘D’Monte Trust’ for his very huge landed properties of many acres of land, situated at various places of Madras / Chennai as as briefed below, including, the D'Monte Colony at RA Puram:
    • Adyar,
    • Alwarpet,
    • Covelong/Kovalam,
    • Egmore,
    • Poonamalle High Rod,
    • Raja Annamalaipuram,
    • Royapettah and
    • Santhome.
The Value of the Landed Properties of DMonte Trust would in several crores of Rupees.

Given below are the values of land of two of the landed propeties covered under the DMone Trust, for example:

Place of Landed Property/Extent of Land/Value of Land as per Government's Guideline Value, of Rs 8 000/- per Sq.Ft

    D'Monte Colony, RA Puram / 186 Grounds=4 46 400 Sq.Ft.=10.24 acres / Rs 357.12 Crores

    Ben's Ground near Madras Boats Club/257 Gronds=6 16 800 Sq.Ft.-14.15 acres / Rs 493.11 Crores

The details of the other landed properties covered under the 'D'Monte Trust would be available in the Trust Deeds of the DMonte Trust.

In the last will and testament of D’Monte, the Roman Catholic Arch-Diocese/Arch Bishop of Mylapore was appointed as the ‘Trustees’ for the huge properties of D'Monte.

D’Monte Colony near St.Mary’s Road, in Alwarpet has been deserted and abandoned since many years.

The evil spirit/ghost of the late owner of the colony is reported to be seen by the people living around the colony.
DMonte Colony under the Roman Catholic Arch Diocese of Madras-Mylapore
Strange happenings, such as the locked doors of some of the houses getting opened themselves and getting locked again are reported to be witnessed by some people.
An auto driver, who used to waiting near the colony died/committed suicide after witnessing some paranormal activity in the colony.
Paranormal Activities inside Houses of DMonte Colony
Watchmen were deployed to guard the abandoned colony, and 2 such watchmen died/committed suicide the very next day of their first night duty in the colony.

The D'Monte Colony is believed to be haunted by the evil spirit/ghost of the late owner of the colony, D'Monte.

The taxi drivers who used to stand in the corner of the road near the D'Monte colony who used to stand there even upto 10 pm, started to away after the sun set, in fear of the haunted D'Monte Cololny.

However, the ghost of the late D’Monte is said to be harmless.

The colony originally had about 20 independent similar houses, in two streets with two lanes on each road.

.More than 10 of the houses deserted by the inhabitants were in ruins and were already demolished.
    Remaining Houses in D'Monte Colony
Only 10 houses have been remaining, those also in deserted and ruined conditions, till recent times, and they also have been completely demolished very recently in October 2015.
D'Monte Colony Before Complete Demolishion of All Houses
All the landed properties of the D'Monte have been properly leased out, except the 'Ben's Garden in the Madras Boats' Club ares - of 12 acres and the 'D'Monte Colony of 10 acres, which are said to have been leased out only recently.
‘Ben’s Garden’ and the ‘D’Monte Colony’ are said to have been given earlier  on leases for 99 years.

Ben's Garden Near Madras Boat Club
However, following court orders, subsequent to litigation, stating that the amounts of the leases were far below the real market value of the same in Chennai City, both the properties are said to be given for fresh lease by public bidding, only recently.

It is also reported that the ‘D’Monte Colony’ has been given to a fresh lease to some reputed company, and the details of the lease are not publicly known.

The last remaining 10  houses have been demolished in October 2015, probably by the new lessees of the landed property.

Now, as the D’Monte Colony is fully vacant, the haunting evil spirit/ghost would have to perform any para normal activity only in the vacant land of 10 acres.

The Lessees of the landed property might be afraid of the haunting of the place by the ghost of the late D’Monte to haunt the place, even if they build new building on it.

Only. as and if the Landed Properties of the D'Monte Trust, valued at several crores of Rupees, are leased out at the real/market value to sound/honest parties, the income from the same can be utilised for the benefit of the needy/poor in India, as wished by the late Portugese Land Lord D'Monte.
