A Brief Summary of the President of India Pranab Mukherjee's Republic Day Address 2014

The Following is a Brief Summary of the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee's Republic Day 2014 Address to the nation on 25th January 2014:
  • Corruption is a cancer that erodes democracy and weakens the foundations of our state.
  • If governments do not remove these flaws, voters will remove governments.
  • Equally dangerous is the rise of hypocrisy in public life.
  • Elections do not give any person the licence to flirt with illusions. Those who seek the trust of voters must promise only what is possible.Government is not a charity shop.Populist anarchy cannot be a substitute for governance.False promises lead to disillusionment, which gives birth to rage, and that rage has one legitimate target: those in power.
  • If Indians are enraged, it is because they are witnessing corruption and waste of national resources.
  • This rage will abate only when governments deliver what they were elected to deliver social and economic progress, not at a snail's pace, but with the speed of a racehorse.
  • Those in office must eliminate the trust deficit between them and the people. Those in politics should understand that every election comes with a warning sign: perform, or perish.
  • There will be a new government before I speak to you again on the eve of our Independence Day. Who wins the coming election is less important than the fact that whosoever wins must have an undiluted commitment to stability, honesty, and the development of India.
  • Our problems will not disappear overnight.I know that democracy has this marvelous ability to self-correct.It is the physician that heals itself, and 2014 must become a year of healing after the fractured and contentious politics of the last few years.
  • 1950 saw the birth of our Republic. I am sure that 2014 will be the year of resurgence.
Jai Hind!

Name: Subhash Chandra Bose
Known As: “Netaji” Subhash Chandra Bose. ‘Netaji’ means ‘Honourable Leader’ and the title is believed to be given by the people of India at large and in particular by the Indian National Poet Rabindranath Tagore.

Father: Janakinath Bose-Advocate

Mother: Prabhavati Devi

Date of Birth: 23rd January 1897 at Cuttack, Odisha

Date of Death: 18th August 1945, at Taiwan

Studied at : Scottish Church College, University of Calcutta, Cambridge University

Occupation: Indian Freedom Fighter

Personal Life:
During his visit to Germany in the year1934, Bose had met Emilie Schenkl, the daughter of an Austrian veterinarian and married her in the year 1937. In the year 1942, Anita Bose, a daughter was born to the Bose-couple.

Political Career:

Bose had been an active member of the Indian National Congress from the year 1921 and he had been the leader of the youth wing of the Congress. And he became the President of the Indian National Congress in 1938.

Bose did not believe  in Mahatma Gandh’s ways of non-violent / satyagraha and war without swords and blood- modes of getting India’s Independence from the Brittish.

Subhash Chandra Bose had been saying to the Indians, "Give Your Blood, I will get you Freedom".

And due to the difference of opinions with Mahatma Gandhi and the high commands of the Congress, Bose was ousted from the Indian National Congress in the year 1939.

Bose had formed a wing of the Indian National Congress- ‘Forward Block’-1939-1940.

In the year 1940, Bose was arrested and kept under ‘house-arrest’ by the British Government and he escaped from India and arrived in Germany in the year 1941.

In November 1941, with German funds, a Free India Centre was set up in Berlin, and soon a Free India Radio, on which Bose broadcast nightly. Bose stayed in Berlin from 1941 until 1943. In 1943, deciding that Germany could not help in gaining India's independence,  he left for Japan, traveling in the German and the Japanese Submarines.

With Japanese support, Bose strengthened ‘Indian National Army’/ (INA),  composed of Indian soldiers of the British Indian army who had been captured in the Battle of Singapore.
During his stay in Japan, Bose coined the popular Indian Freedom Struggle slogan –“Jai Hind”.

Death of Subhash Chandra Bose:

In the year 1945, while flying in a Japanese aircraft, the over-loaded plane crashed near the ‘Formosa Islands’/Taiwan and  Bose sustained third degree burns in the ‘plane-crash’ and died in a hospital in Taihoku/ Taiwan under Japan.

However, there had been some differences of opinions in the death of ‘Netaji’Subhsash Chandra Bose.  Some people believe that no such plane-crash occurred on 18th August 1945 and Bose did not die in that plane-crash.

They believe that Bose went to Russia and died only in the year 1970. And some other people believe that Bose had been living as a Hindu monk Kumnami Baba/Bagwanji in Uttar Pradesh and died in the year 1985.

The Union Government of India decided to confer India's highest civilian award 'The Bharat Ratna', posthumously to 'Netaji' Subhash Chandra Bose in the year 1992.

Some people, including the family members of Bose had been believing that 'Netaji' Subhash Chandra Bose had been still alive.

However, subsequent to a PIL filed in the Supreme Court of India, against the matter of conferring 'Bharat Ratna' to Bose in view of the doubts and mystery surrounding the death of Bose, the posthumous award was not conferred on Bose, in order to recognize the sentiments of the family members of Bose.

"Netaji' Subhash Chandra Bose will  live in the hearts and minds of Indians for ever.

Generally, the judgements of the judges of such singing competitions rarely coincide with the popular opinions.

Will it be a good suggestion to such singing and dance reality shows, at every stage, the marks can be given by popular voting, instead of by the so-called 'judges' and experts ? (Avoiding, 'eliminations' tears and sad faces of judges etc.)

Do You Know The Reasons For the Bank Employees' - "All India Strike" For 2 Days (9th and 10th February 2014) ? !

$

0
The Wage Revision of the Bank employees of the public sector banks in India has been due since November 2012.

As the Indian Banks Association/IBA and the Government of India had not revised the wages of about 8 lakhs  employees of a total number of 27 public sector banks, as per their demands for a hike of 30%, even after more than one year of the due date for wage revision, the bank employees’ trade unions/United Forum of Bank Unions decided to go on an “All India Strike” and announced a 2 days’ strike on 20th &21st January 2014.

However, as the IBA offered a hike of 9.5% (from their original 5 % hike)  with a promise to improve further the proposed strike in January 2014 was postponed by the banks’ unions.  In a meeting with the representatives of the bank employees the IBA offered to increase their offer from 9.5% to 10.00%.
Obviously annoyed by the attitude of the IBA and the Government of India, the bank employees unions decided to go on an “All India Strike” for 2 days on 9th and 10th of February 2014.
As the banks all over India would be closed down for about 3.5 days continuously, the banking services will be badly affected.
In the minds of the customers of the banks and the public, there are mixed feelings and reactions to the proposed 2 days’ strike by the bank employees demanding their wage revisions over due for more than a year.

The wages of the public sector banks had been elevated from a very low level by the united actions of the bank employees’ trade unions since the nationalization of commercial banks in India in the year 1969.

For some period of time, the wages of the bank employees had been viewed as very high compared to the wages of employees of the central /state governments and other public sector undertakings.

However, as and after the wages of the government/other psu employees , including ‘teachers’ of schools and colleges were increased considerably, the wages of the bank employees has been comparatively low.

Also, due to ‘computerization’/’mechanization’ in banks, the man-power in the branches of the banks have been reduced and the bank employees are facing ‘work-pressure’.
The bank employees, especially, those in the management cadre have been facing pressures from their managements, staff members and the customers & the public.

However, the IBA and the Government of India are not in favour of doing justice to the legitimate demands for a reasonable wage revision in time.

Hence, according to the leaders of the bank employees’ trade unions, they have been compelled to resort to the ultimate weapon in their hands to get their demands heard by the IBA and the government of India: “All India Strike” for 2 days.

The customers and the public who are mostly in support of the demands of the bank employees, however, feel that the trade unions might wait for some more months and negotiate with the new Indian Union Government after the April 2014 General Elections.

The former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated on 21st May 1991 at Sriperumpudur, near Chennai,Tamilnadu by ‘human-suicide- bomb-blast’.
Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumpudur on 21 05 1991
A total of 26 persons were convicted with death penalty in the year 1998 by TADA court and as and when the cases went to the Supreme Court of India, the death penalties of the following 4 persons only were confirmed in the year 2000:
  • V.Sriharan alias Murugan
  • A.G.Perarivalan
  • T.Suthendra Raja alias Santhan and
Murugan Perarivalan Santhan
  •  Nalini Wife of Murugan
Nalini Murugan

The female convict-Nalini’s death penalty was commuted to life term by the Tamil Nadu Governor in the year 2000,  following a recommendation by the state cabinet and a public appeal by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

And the mercy petitions of remaining 3 of the Rajiv Gandhi killers, Murugan, Perarivalan and Santhan  were rejected by the President of India in the year 2011 after 11 years.

The death row convicts filed writ petitions in the Madras High Court challenging the President of India’s rejection of their mercy pleas after more than 11 years and the Madras High Court had stayed their hangings in the year 2011.

The Supreme Court of India had transferred to itself the above writ petitions from  the Madras High Court in May 2012.
On 18th February 2014,  the Supreme Court of India bench comprising the following 3 Justices:
  • Chief Justice of India- P.Sathasivam (Head of the Bench),
  • Justice Ranjan Gogoi and
  • Justice Shiva Kirti Singh
has delivered an historic and a landmark judgement in commuting the death penalties into life imprisonment of the following 3 of the killers of the former Prime Minister of India- Rajiv Gandhi on the grounds of inordinate delay in disposing of their mercy petitions by the President of India
.
According to the Supeme Court Bench "Life Imprisonment" means imprisonment for life. That is the life prisoners should die inside jail.

However, the Supreme Court Bench has advised the State government of Tamilnadu  to  exercise its remission powers under Section 432 and 433 of the Criminal Procedure Codes and consider release of the 3 convicts who had been languishing  in jail for more than 23 years.

It is notable that the Supreme Court of India had commuted death penalties of 15 convicts into life imprisonment on 21st January 2014, announcing that "inordinate and inexplicable" delays in carrying out executions were grounds for reducing their original punishment.

Will India soon remove the capital punishment / Death Penalty totally ?

There has been news in a section of media in India regarding changes in the Indian Railway’s Tickets-cancellation/refund rules.
According to the news hereinafter ‘No Refund’ would be made for cancellation of all the confirmed train tickets booked.
The Indian Railways has confirmed, on 24th February 2014, that there is no change in the Refund Rules,  which have been notified in June 2013 and have been brought into force with effect from 1st July, 2013.

According to the notified refund rules, passengers on a confirmed ticket can avail refund up-to 50% of the fare provided the ticket is cancelled within 2 hours of the departure of the train.

All the rules regarding cancellations and refunds of train tickets booked at tickets booking counters, I Tickets and E Tickets would remain unchanged.

However, 'No Refund' will be granted on cancellation of confirmed Tatkal tickets.

For contingent cancellation & Waitlisted Tatkal ticket cancellations, prior to the preparation of the charts for the trains, charges will be deducted as per existing Railway rules.

IRCTC will send SMS for Confirmation of Wait-Listed Tickets to the Mobiles of Passengers

While booking for train tickets in India, the wait-listed passengers have to find out the status of their ‘waiting list’-tickets by:
  • visiting the website of the ‘irctc’ via internet, for bookings done online,
  • visiting the ‘indianrailinfo’ website for pnr status via internet,
  • by contacting ‘irctc’ via the telephone number:’139 and /or by sending SMS with the 10 digits pnr number to the irctc-at ‘139
  • and looking into the chart prepared by the railways displayed in the railway stations and pasted on the coaches
Hereinafter, the passengers need not do any of the above to know the status of their waitlisted train tickets.

The Indian Railways will send the status message/SMS to their mobile phones, as and when the waitlisted tickets get confirmed.
The software for the above ‘SMS’-based service has been developed by the "Centre Fof Railway  Information System"  /CRIS, the technological arm of the Indian Railways.
The process of the ‘SMS’ alert for confirmation of waitlisted tickets had been in a trial stage and test confirmation messages for confirmed waitlisted tickets had been sent by the Indian Railways since last ten days.

In the above such 'Test'-SMS confirmation process, along with the coach and berth numbers of the confirmed 'WL' tickets,  wrong messages  had been sent to some of the passengers that “CHART PREPARED” when actually the chart had not been prepared.  However, again the same confirmation SMS had been repeated as and when the chart was actually prepared.

The preparation of chart is a vital factor for the passengers to decide on cancellation of some of the tickets booked by them. Let us hope that the IRCTC would take care to rectify the above error of 'chart prepared' message, as and when the chart is not prepared.

According to the Indian Railways, the actual ‘SMS’ alert of confirmation of 'Wait Listed Tickets' has commenced w.e.f.03rd March 2014.

The Indian Railways passengers would feel relived from tension and be happy with the Indian Railways' SMS confirmation of Wait Listed Tickets.

Founder and Pramukh/Chief of the Shiv Sena Party ( The  right-wing Marathi ethnocentric party active mainly in the State of  Maharashtra)

Bal Thackeray formed the “Shiv Sena” on 19th  June 1966 to fight for the rights of the natives of the state of Maharashtra.

Bal Thackeray’s ‘Shiv Sena’ party  was anti-communist and he had been against all the ‘Non-Maharashtrians’ and especially ‘Muslims’.

However, according to Bal Thackeray  he had never been against Muslims and they only protected them and Shiv Sena’s women Sainiks fought to save Muslim colonies and they fought  only against those Muslims who came against them.

It is notable that Bal Thackeray’s grand -daughter got married to a Gujarathi muslim.

And his personal physician of Bal Thackery was a muslim-Dr.Jalil Parkar.
Shiv Sena had allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party/BJP and the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance won
the  Maharashtra State Assembly elections- 1995 and came to power and was in power from 1995 to 1999.

Bal Thackeray had been banned from voting and contesting in any election for six years from 11 December 1999 till 10 December 2005 on the recommendations of the Election Commission for indulging in corrupt practice by seeking votes in the name of religion.

In the year 2006, Bal Thackeray's nephew Raj Thackeray got separated from Bal Thackeray/Shiv Sena and formed the “Maharashtra Navnirman Sena”/MNS.
So, on his retirement from active politics in the year 2006 Bal Thackeray appointed his son, Uddhav Thackeray  as the leader of Shiv Sena.
When Bal Thackeray died on 17th November 2012, he was accorded a state funeral at Shivaji Park
on 19th November 2012, attended by about  2 million people.

The senior representatives of the Maharashtra Government were present in the funeral and cremation and event was broadcast live on national television channels.Though, Bal Thackeray had not held held any official position, he was given the 21-gun salute.

Bal Thackeray is one of the few people to have been given state funeral without being a member of either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha.

The funeral expenses created controversies when media reports claimed that the Bombay Municipal Corporation/BMC  had used taxpayers' money.

In response to these reports, the Shiv Sena party later sent a cheque of Rs 5,00,000 to the Bomay Municipal Corporation.
Quotes of Bal Thackeray:

"For Bal Thackeray   the interests of Maharashtra were particularly important and he always strived to inculcate a sense of pride in its people. He founded the Shiv Sena and built the party into a formidable force in the State politics with his strong leadership. Bal Thackeray was a consummate communicator, whose stature in the politics of Maharashtra was unique.
-Dr.Manmohan Singh-Prime Minister of India

"A political giant has departed. It is rare that I have seen in these 65 years of independent India, a political leader who has left such a deep imprint on the country's events as Bal Thackeray."-
